Breaking Barriers: Empowering girls through ICT

In Ghana, a country where more than half of the population is female, it’s alarming to note that women only earn around 30% of the total household income. Somehow numbers like these do not seem to fit together and paint a dark picture of the current state of gender equality in our society. Access to education, social norms and violence against women and girls are some more examples that highlight the need to take action.

At Grow Ghana, we recognize that the key to addressing these persistent challenges lies in empowering women through education. By providing young girls with hands-on computer training and nurturing their curiosity for the sciences, we aim to unlock their full potential and pave the way for a self-determined and fulfilling life. We are committed to this goal as a whooping 80 out of our 114 students are female. That is more than 70% of our current cohort!

One powerful way to inspire girls is to showcase success stories of confident and extinguished women. On International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th, 2024, we had the privilege of hosting a workshop for our female students. Special thanks go out to Jannete Kwakye and Ama Amoah, two truly inspiring women, whose talks on what it means to be a women made the workshop an unforgettable experience.

But our celebration of women doesn’t end on International Women’s Day. Another significant milestone in recognizing women’s achievements in the tech industry is Girls in ICT Day, observed annually on April 25th. Naturally, we did not let this opportunity slip to talk with some of our students about there future careers ideas and why it might be interesting to go towards a Tech direction. A follow up session in engineering was sure to captivate even the least interested student.

Inspiring women to follow a career in the sciences and Tech is and will remain one of our primary goals as Grow Ghana! We hope we can encourage many more young minds to participate in this so dearly needed change for the future.

If you share our vision of empowering young girls through education, we invite you to support our cause by donating to Grow Ghana through GlobalGiving. Additionally, you can stay updated on our future projects by signing up for our newsletter.

Together, let’s work towards a future where every girl in Ghana has the opportunity to realize her full potential and shape her own destiny!
